Obituary for Joseph W. Culhane

Dr. Joseph Culhane, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away after an extended illness on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Crouse Hospital. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Joseph and Mary (Purcell) Culhane. Joseph graduated from Aquinas High School in Rochester where he played football. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer. After leaving the Navy, he received his Bachelor’s Degree at SUNY Brockport and his Masters and PhD from Syracuse University. He taught for many years at SUNY Oswego, Cortland and Morrisville. He was acknowledged for his innovative teaching of Reading by Who’s Who, both in America and Internationally, and by Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary fraternity for outstanding educators.
Joe was very active at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, serving on the Parish Council, an Eucharistic minister, usher and lector. He was an avid golfer and bowler, serving as president of both leagues.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Teresa Davis Culhane; his daughter, Shelia Culhane Richards; sons, Steven (Anne) Culhane and Michael (Dan Mattice) Culhane; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Davis and Shannon Culhane, Andrew Richards and Katie Reid; and his brother, Brendan Culhane of Rochester.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, December 9th at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs St., Fayetteville. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Fayetteville.
