Obituary for William Edward Young

William E. Young, 78, of Manlius passed away Tuesday at home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Little Falls, NY to the late Wendell and Margaret Young, grew up in Sydney, NY and graduated from the Delaware Academy in Delhi, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1960 with a B.S. in Accounting and was a member of Zeta Psi Fraternity. After graduating from college, Bill proudly served in the United States Navy. Bill enjoyed a great 30-year career with Carrier Corporation and took early retirement at 55 to enjoy life.
After his retirement, Bill and Jean enjoyed their annual cross country trips, stopping to visit treasured friends along the way. He was a volunteer for the McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center and a member of the Mallards Landing HOA Board.
Bill was an avid golfer and helped organize his beloved Pompey Senior Men’s League, and he and Jean loved playing the Swingers Friday Night Group. He was an active member of the FM Social Club and enjoyed his men’s poker league and bridge groups. He and Jean always looked forward to their monthly dinner groups with friends of over 50 years and their weekly duplicate bridge game at Cazenovia Library. Bill was a huge Syracuse Orange fan and loved catching every game.
Bill and Jean enjoyed travel adventures with their daughter, Susan, and over the years took advantage of her living in the UK, Switzerland, Boston and LA. Highlights included an Alaskan Cruise, a New Year’s trip to Death Valley, visiting the Matterhorn in Zermatt, touring castles in the UK, and visiting family in Sweden. They spent their 50th anniversary in DC with the entire family.
Bill was an Eagle Scout, a tradition honored by both his son, Raymond and grandson, Peter.
Bill was a kind man who was loved and cherished by all. He will be missed.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Jean; daughter, Susan Young; son, Raymond (Susan) Young; grandchildren, Peter and Betsy Young; brother, Jack (Dale) Young; and several nieces and nephews.
