Obituary for Edmund B. Coughlin

Edmund B. Coughlin, 86, of Manlius passed away peacefully on Friday. Born in Syracuse, he was the son of the late Philip F. and Gertrude K. Coughlin. He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1948, LeMoyne College in 1952 and the University of Pennsylvania - School of Dental Medicine in 1956. He was a member of Xi Psi Phi Pi Chapter - Dental Fraternity. Ed served in the Navy from 1956 to 1958 as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corps stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA and following as a dental officer in the U.S.M.C. Reserve from 1958 to 1963.
Ed retired from his dental practice, located at 107 Highbridge St., Fayetteville, in 1993 after 33 years. His practice was not limited to humans. He made a crown for a doberman, performed a root canal on a pit bull and at Dr. Stack’s request he extracted an infected tooth of a Burnet Park Zoo lion named “King”.
Ed was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Manlius and Christ Our Light Church in Pulaski. He was a life member of the Onondaga County Dental Society, NY State Dental Society - 5th District and the American Dental Society. He was a charter member of the Cavalry Club, St. Antiques Senior Group and a former member of the Syra-Canadian Hunting and Fishing Club. He volunteered for the F-M School District providing mouth guards for the football team, as dentist at the New York State School, and for F-M Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann; sons, E. Timothy of Manlius, Daniel J. (Dorraine) of Rochester and Patrick (Liz) of Nashua, NH; and seven grandchildren, Curtis and Emily of Manlius, Dillon Delaney and Donovan of Rochester and Jessica and Sarah of Nashua, NH. He was predeceased by brothers, Bennett and Dr. P. Richard.
Family and friends may call from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Thursday at St. Ann’s Church 104 Academy St., Manlius. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DeWitt.
