Obituary for Douglas L. Bartow, Jr.

Douglas L. Bartow Jr., 75, of East Syracuse, passed into eternal rest on Friday, surrounded by his loving family following a long illness.

Doug is survived by his wife and best friend, Mary Ellen (Smith); and children, Christopher of Ballston Spa, NY and Douglas III and Katherine (Munro) of Brunswick, NY; as well as three grandchildren, Cameron, Brendan and Grace. Doug and Mary Ellen celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2014.

Doug was born in Troy, NY and earned his Bachelor degree in Landscape Architecture from SUNY-ESF at Syracuse University, class of 1963. Doug completed 4 years of military service in the Army from 1963-67, earning the rank of Captain and embarked on a career in Landscape Architecture, working for the NYS DOT and retiring in 2002. He was a leader in his field and board member of the New York State Association of Transportation Engineers (NYSATE.)

He was active in his community; a former scout leader, little league coach, Sunday school teacher and parishioner of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Dewitt. As an alum of Syracuse University, he was a passionate supporter of SU sports and  all things orange. Doug loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hiker and camper. He particularly enjoyed the Adirondack mountains and his camp on the Goodnow Flow with family and friends. His quick wit and humor will live forever in the hearts of everyone he touched.

Friends are invited to join the family in celebration Doug's life at a service on Saturday, June 24th from 2 to 3 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 14 Jamar Drive, Fayetteville, NY 13066.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memoriam be made to the ESF Landscape Architecture Advisory Council Scholarship Fund. To donate, visit: https://wwwinfo-2.esf.edu/donate/
