Obituary for Gerald F. ""Newt"" Carhart

Gerald F. “Newt” Carhart, 83, of Minoa, passed away at home on Saturday. He was born in Minoa in 1934. He worked the farm and Carharts Dairy until 1964. Jerry attended and graduated Minoa High School. He was very involved with baseball, basketball and 6-Man Football, having achieved second in the country for 6-Man Football. He was an avid golfer and outdoors man and enjoyed traveling and trips to the casino. Upon graduation he served in the US Army. Jerry was a volunteer fireman with the Minoa Fire Department for 55 years. He retired from the Town of Manlius Highway Department after 25 years. He also ran his wood business for over 35 years.
Upon retiring in 1989, he spent as much time as possible at his camp in Old Forge. He loved having his family and grandchildren with him.
Jerry was predeceased by his wife Joan, parents Leo and Katharine Carhart and brother Robert.
He is survived by his children, Francis (Brenda) of Chittenango, Paul (Margaret), Timothy (Sue) and Gerald (Niki), all of Kirkville and William (Brenda) of Baldwinsville; grandchildren, Philip, John, Jared, MacKenzie, Connor, Hunter, Jessica; three step-grandchildren, Lauren, Matt and Kelly and two great-grandchildren, Noah and Savannah Jo; two sisters, Patricia (Joe) Zappala of Kirkville and Kay Bastable of Red Creek and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his friend and companion Sue "Shiny" Rank, and her wonderful family.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, August 30 at R. H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa. Prayer services will begin at 10:15 am on Thursday August 31 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am at St. Mary’s Church, Minoa. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minoa.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Minoa Fire Department, PO Box 104, Minoa, NY 13116.
