Obituary for Aloysius V. Vizgaitis

Aloysius (“Al”) V. Vizgaitis (1939-2017), 77, of Fayetteville, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 16, after a difficult battle with cancer.

Aloysius Vizgaitis was born in Vilkija, Lithuania, and later emigrated to Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, where he lived before moving to the U.S. He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Lawrence University, where he played for the ice hockey team and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in psychology from Syracuse University. Al worked primarily as a school psychologist, and retired in 2002 after more than 20 years with the Chittenango Central School District.

Al was an avid tennis player and golfer in his later years, and a skier and ice hockey player throughout his younger years. He was a lifelong advocate of the value of education. He could often be found enjoying a latte, engaged in a good conversation, or watching his daughters’ tennis matches.

Surviving are his two daughters, Alexandra and Allison Vizgaitis.

Calling hours are 1:00-3:00pm Saturday, September 30, at Eaton-Tubbs-Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St. Fayetteville, followed by a celebration of Al’s life at the family home for close family and friends. His final resting place is in Fayetteville Cemetery.
