Obituary for Gary W. Shortslef

Gary W. Shortslef, 70, of Manlius, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. After graduating from Hannibal High School in 1965, he served in the US Navy. While aboard the USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7), the Gemini 10 space capsule was recovered in the Caribbean Sea in 1966. After 30 years working for United Parcel Service, he retired and worked for Greenview Golf Club in West Monroe where lots of golf was played for the next 15 years! A musician from childhood, he played bass guitar in many groups and bands. He was an avid Ohio State football and basketball fan, wearing their colors almost everyday.

He was predeceased by his mother, Norma Kandt Shortslef; father, Ward Shortslef Jr; and brother, Dale Shortslef.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Dawn DeLaCruz of Fulton, Crystal (Edward) Hatten of Chapin, SC and Kristin (Ryan) Kelly of Mt. Laurel, NJ; nine grandchildren; nephew, James; nieces, Andrea and Kristy; and sister-in-law, Denise.

Family and friends may call from Noon to 2:00 pm Sunday at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The service will follow the calling hours. Burial will be in Fayetteville Cemetery.
