Obituary for Jean S. Haley

Jean Spencer Haley died December 18 at Crouse Hospital. She was born on November 21, 1916 to J. Herbert and Edna Nash Spencer in Norwich, NY. She attended schools in Norwich, graduating as valedictorian of her class. She matriculated at Elmira College engaging in many activities and attaining her degree summa cum laude in 1938. Mrs. Haley also attained a Masters Degree in social work from Columbia University.

Elmira College and ensuing lifelong friendships were her special passion. She served as the president of the Syracuse Elmira College Club and was a long time reporter for the Elmira Campus Magazine. Her early social work involved child welfare services, but in later years she worked in alcoholism treatment and retired as Assistant Director of Alcoholism Services at Crouse Hospital.

She enjoyed summers at Chenango Lake in the family cottage, a special place in her heart since 1921. Mrs. Haley was a member and Elder of the United Church of Fayetteville, a member of the Zonta Club of Syracuse and a former member of the Shakespeare Club.

She is survived by her son, David Haley; her son-in-law, David Gruenewald; and grandsons, John David and Thomas Gruenewald.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Marcia Gruenewald and her husband, Thomas John Haley.

Family and friends may call from 3:30 to 7:00 pm Thursday at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The funeral service will be 10:00 am Friday at the United Church of Fayetteville, 310 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. Spring burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Norwich.
