Jim attended college at SUNY Potsdam where he received his BA and MS degrees in Education. After teaching high school mathematics he continued his formal education at Syracuse University where he received his Doctorate in Education.
Jim began his higher education career as a faculty member at the University of Maryland. While there he was awarded a five million dollar federal grant that led to the creation of “Teaching Centers” that eventually spread across the Nation. He received state and national recognition for these centers, including the prestigious “Outstanding Program” by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He worked tirelessly to improve student achievement through the professional development of quality teachers. He made many presentations at state and national conferences and was highly regarded by his peers. He was an active member of the National Association of Teacher Educators and was elected and served a term as president of the organization.
Jim returned to Syracuse University in the 70’s as Assistant Dean of Education. Through continued federal grants he developed and became the Director of the National Council of States for In-service Education where he worked with the chief officer of each state in a continuing effort to improve education on a national level. After retiring from Syracuse University in the 90’s he joined the faculty and administration at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his brother John and sister Jane Collins.
