Life Legacy

David H. Borst, 69, passed away at Sunnyside Care Center on January 22, 2013 after a losing, yet courageous battle with cancer. Dave was born in Syracuse, March 11, 1943 to G. Herbert and Marian Borst. Despite a bout with polio, Dave enjoyed a childhood filled with a love of camping being named “YMCA Camper of the Year”. He also had a lifelong love of baseball starting by playing little league and ending with the frustrating, fun league of fantasy baseball. He especially loved the NY Yankees and often talked about going to the Don Larson World Series game with his dad. Dave’s mom, Marian, passed away more than 30 years ago but he remained proud of her achievements including her award winning apple pies! Dave enjoyed gardening; planting vegetables and beautiful tulips. He appreciated the earth and worked at the National Center for Appropriate Technology in Butte, MT during the early 80’s, developing alternative energy sources before it became the vogue. David also worked for many years at the Syracuse Human Rights Commission and Syracuse Plastics. Many of David’s childhood and adult friends remained in touch throughout their lives.
Dave was on the Student Council at Nottingham High School, transferring in his junior year to Mt. Herman Prep School in Massachusetts where he played on the football team. He attended Denison University in Ohio before transferring to Syracuse University as a sophomore earning a BA and Master’s Degree from the Maxwell School. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He continued his education in Seattle, WA but always remained a strong supporter of SU Sports.
Dave developed many friends through his years of association with AA. He spent the past decade of his life helping others overcome addictions as a counselor, most recently with Syracuse Behavior Health Center until March 2012 when he retired because of his illness.
David is survived by his son in Syracuse, Max Borst (Sarah) and his grandchildren Josh, Brayden, Simon and Chloe; as well as his loving daughter, Leslie Marie Borst. He is also survived by his 96 year old father, G. Herbert Borst; his step-mother, Jeanette and her children, Mark (Carol) Eich, Michelle Montroy and Lisa Abernethy; as well as his uncle and aunt, “Pop” and Janet Annable of Navarino; numerous cousins and his ex-wife and friend, Marcia Breen-Borst.
Family and friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 pm Saturday at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. Dave will be laid to rest next to his Mom at the Fayetteville Cemetery in the Spring.
