Obituary for Dr. Stephen A. Montes

Dr. Stephen A. Montes, D.O., 72 of Muskegon, Michigan and Manlius, New York entered unto rest on July 10, 2015 in Syracuse, New York surrounded by his loving family. Steve was born in Chicago, IL and attended Proviso West High School, Hillside, IL, class of 1961. He also graduated from Rosary College in River Forest, IL with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1974. He later graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1979 as a physician, followed by four additional years of Residency in Orthopedic Medicine.
Steve served as an orthopedic surgeon at Muskegon General Hospital in Muskegon, MI in private practice from 1984 until his partial retirement in 1999. Steve was a Board Certified physician, and was a Past President of American Association of Physician Specialists (AAPS), and the President of the AAPS Foundation. Steve was known to his peers as an innovator to modern procedures in medicine, a mentor and friend, but always held a kind and caring heart to his patients.
He was previously employed as a policeman with the Chicago Police Department from 1964 to 1974. Steve served honorably for his county as a Major in the United States Army Reserve as a surgeon during Operation Desert Storm, and as an active duty Army Specialist during the Vietnam conflict serving in Lawton, OK.
Steve had numerous outside interests including computer technology, hunting, fishing, and camping, but mostly spending time with his family. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marjorie L. Montes; two children, Michael A. Montes of Manlius, NY, and daughter in law Catherine W. Montes; and Stephen L. Montes of Saugerties, NY; and three grandchildren, Michael J. Montes, Matthew S. Montes, and Sarah F. Montes, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Anthony F. Montes and Rose Montes of Bellwood, IL; one sister Starlyn Provo, and two brothers Anthony F. Montes and Jack Montes.
The celebration of Steve’s life will be held at two separate locations: Saturday July 25, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Church, North Muskegon, MI, and a reception will follow; and Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Manlius, New York, and a reception will also follow.
