Obituary for Betsy-Ann Nelson Stone

Betsy-Ann Nelson Stone, a longtime resident of Dewitt, NY, passed away peacefully Friday, February 26, 2021. Her 87 years were filled with beloved family, friends, and wonderful memories.

Born in Mount Vernon, NY to the late Lawrence and Grace Nelson, Betsy graduated from Nottingham High and Vassar College. She did post graduate studies with the School for International Training in Copenhagen and Oslo making lifelong friends. She went on to earn her M.Ed from Syracuse University.

Teaching was an avocation throughout her life. After moving to New York to pursue a career with the Pelham, NY elementary public schools, she met James Rae Stone and they were married in 1963. They moved to Summit NJ in 1967, where she raised two boys and was a classroom volunteer and tutor.

In 1980 her family moved to Dewitt, NY. She volunteered as a tutor with Literacy Volunteers and worked as a nursery school teacher in Dewitt. She started a 2nd career as a personal banker, educating customers with lessons in personal finance. In retirement, she became a docent at the Everson Museum, taking delight in finding ways to engage children with art.

Betsy is predeceased by her husband, Jim and her brother, Jon (Jane) Nelson of Manlius. She leaves behind her sons, Timothy (Carole) of Summit, NJ and Nelson (Courtney) of Campbell Hall, NY; her sister, Sue Roesgen (John) of Amelia Isl., FL; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held later this year at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church.

The family requests that a donation be made to the Everson Museum, 401 Harrison Street, Syracuse, NY 13202 in lieu of flowers.
