Obituary

Carol A. Gilkey of East Syracuse passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020.  After Carol graduated from East Syracuse High School, for ten years she was a secretary for the New York State Thruway Authority in the Syracuse office.  Carol changed careers to become a full time Mom.  She was an extraordinary mother to her two children.  She returned to the work force at Agway Petroleum Division for twenty years.  While continuing to work full time, she also earned an Associate’s Degree from Onondaga Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia College.

Carol was a devoted member of Collamer United Church for sixty-four years, serving as an Elder, secretary, treasurer, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and continually volunteering for many church functions.

Carol had a talent for poetry and wrote many poems for friends and relatives special occasions.

She was happiest in her retired years running, biking, spending time with family on the beaches of Jekyll Island.  Carol shared a great love of family, friends, and life, and one of her favorite roles was being a grandmother.

Carol is survived by Richard, her loving husband of sixty-one years; her two children: Karen (Vincent) Nastasi of Massachusetts and Steven (Cynthia) Gilkey of Connecticut; and her grandchildren: Joseph, Kyle Andrea and Alyssa; sisters: Mary (Hank) Butler, and Linda Margensey; and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents Chester and Julia Featherly; sisters: Ruth Hilleges and Shirley Lawson; brothers: Chester, Ronald, Gerald, Robert and Richard Featherly.

Regretfully, due to these difficult times, private graveside services will be held in Collamer Cemetery. A celebration of Carol’s life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to be made to Collamer United Church 6865 Fly Road, East Syracuse, New York 13057

You’ll be missed Aunt Carol . So nice to learn so much about your life in your obit . I admire how you had a relentless devotion to family and your church ! You were always sweet to our family . My Mom told me that Dad said he had helped you pick out your first car. I can see you too bombing around in convertible in the day . Lol . Now reunited with my Daddy after a big (uncle Bob style ) hug ! You left a great legacy... your wonderful kids and grand kids! Much love to you and your family, Ronald Featherly Family.

Dear Dick, Karen, Steven and families,
I’m so saddened by Carol’s passing. I have many great memories growing up across the street from you all. I played lots of Barbies there with Karen, learned to do the Hustle with Steven and took sewing lessons from Carol with my sister Pam. We were so fortunate to call you neighbors. I am especially grateful for the friendship Dick and Carol had with my parents. They were there when my mother needed them most. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love you guys. 💕. Paula (Reardon) Martino, Perry, Jackie, Jeff and Mallory Martino
