Obituary for Carol A. Gilkey

Carol A. Gilkey of East Syracuse passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020.  After Carol graduated from East Syracuse High School, for ten years she was a secretary for the New York State Thruway Authority in the Syracuse office.  Carol changed careers to become a full time Mom.  She was an extraordinary mother to her two children.  She returned to the work force at Agway Petroleum Division for twenty years.  While continuing to work full time, she also earned an Associate’s Degree from Onondaga Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia College.

Carol was a devoted member of Collamer United Church for sixty-four years, serving as an Elder, secretary, treasurer, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and continually volunteering for many church functions.

Carol had a talent for poetry and wrote many poems for friends and relatives special occasions.

She was happiest in her retired years running, biking, spending time with family on the beaches of Jekyll Island.  Carol shared a great love of family, friends, and life, and one of her favorite roles was being a grandmother.

Carol is survived by Richard, her loving husband of sixty-one years; her two children: Karen (Vincent) Nastasi of Massachusetts and Steven (Cynthia) Gilkey of Connecticut; and her grandchildren: Joseph, Kyle Andrea and Alyssa; sisters: Mary (Hank) Butler, and Linda Margensey; and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents Chester and Julia Featherly; sisters: Ruth Hilleges and Shirley Lawson; brothers: Chester, Ronald, Gerald, Robert and Richard Featherly.

Regretfully, due to these difficult times, private graveside services will be held in Collamer Cemetery. A celebration of Carol’s life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to be made to Collamer United Church 6865 Fly Road, East Syracuse, New York 13057
