Catherine (Kay) A. McCarvill passed away peacefully on May 20, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. Kay was born in New York City on July 1, 1938, and was a graduate of St. Alphonsus Commercial High School in New York, class of 1955. Kay is survived by her husband, Terrence McCarvill, of Fayetteville, NY; her brother, Hugh McGloin, of Washington, DC; her children Kathleen McCarvill (Tom) Burns of Boca Raton, FL, Maureen McCarvill (Jeff) Whitehead of Ithaca, NY, and Kerri Ann (Joe) Massman of Kansas City, MO; her grandchildren Dillon McCarvill, Molly McCarvill, Shannon Dracup, Dan Dracup, Joe Massman, Erin Dracup, Mary Massman, Kylie Burns, Katie Massman, Shea Burns, and Anna Massman. Kay was preceded in death by her son, John McCarvill, her grandson, Owen Burns, her parents, Hugh and Dorothy McGloin, and her sister, Loretta Goldstein.
The love of Kay’s life was her husband of 58 years, Terry, and their bond was extraordinary, creating a life full of love, laughter and adventures shared. They relished each other’s company, and always put the other’s comfort and joy before their own. May everyone be blessed to know a love like theirs. Kay was most proud of her children Kathy, Maureen, John and Kerri, and she dedicated her life to ensuring that they always felt her unconditional support and love. Kay’s greatest joy in life came from her beloved grandchildren, and she had a profoundly close relationship with each and every one of them, never missing the chance to celebrate their birthdays and many milestones. Annual family trips were a tradition that the entire family participated in, and the closeness this time fostered was Kay’s lasting legacy to those she loved most in life.
Wherever Kay was living, she was an unbelievable force for good, tirelessly seeking out ways big and small to make a difference in the lives of everyone around her. From Class President of her Senior Class in high school to President of the Student Teacher Parent Association at FM High School, from Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader to fighting for Title IX rights of female high school athletes in New York, from keeping in touch with her innumerable lifelong friends to doting on the teens in Leurenkill, Kay believed building community was both a privilege and a responsibility to be cherished. While she spent her children’s early years at home, Kay began a highly successful career in real estate once her children were grown, and she took particular pride in helping first time home buyers. Those blessed to be a part of Kay’s life will always feel her loving presence.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish, 400 Salt Springs St., Fayetteville, NY. A memorial service will be held this summer, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
