Obituary for Charles B. Mann
Charles B. Mann, 101, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2020. Charlie (also known as Bud) was born in Syracuse on January 25, 1919 and graduated from Nottingham High School. He was a life-long resident of the Syracuse area. Charlie was a veteran of World War II. Both a paratrooper and qualified Glider infantry, Charlie was a member of the 17th Airborne. He received a Purple Heart after the Battle of the Bulge.
Charlie was a salesman specializing in quality food products for the early part of his business career. He later owned and managed two local supermarkets - McKinley’s Market in Mattydale, and Mann’s Foods in Liverpool. He was recognized by all for his friendliness to customers and the guidance he gave to his employees, including many relatives and local residents.
Upon retirement, Charlie pursued many hobbies, included horseshoes, table tennis, bowling, cribbage, and most of all singing. He was a charter member of the singing group “Nostalgia Notes” and sang with the group well into his 90s.
Charlie was a loving and devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness and gentle sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, June. He had three children, Keith (Lori), Kent (Mary) and Ted (Yan-ju), three grandchildren, Katherine (Adam), Doug (Grace), and Ashlea (Andrew), and two great-grandchildren, Calvin and Mae.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the Syracuse VA home-based primary care team as well as the staff at the New York State Veteran’s Home at Oxford, NY.
Family and friends may call from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday July 5 at the Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. Burial will be Monday at White Chapel Memory Gardens. Please note that June will be available at the funeral home via an online video connection between 2:30-3:30 pm on Sunday for those attending the calling hours who would like to briefly chat with her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Disable American Veterans organization (DAV.org).
