Obituary for Daniel F. Bates Sr.

Daniel F. Bates, Sr., 81, of Jamesville passed away peacefully. He was born in Syracuse the son of the late Robert Bates, Sr. and Elizabeth Bates Flaherty. After high school Daniel proudly served in the United States Navy on the USS Independence and on the USS Intrepid from June 30th, 1956 to October 22nd, 1959. He spent his life in the Trucking Industry working for Leaseway, Marsh-Race, Singer Transport, OCRA, as well as being an owner-operator of his own truck. He was a member of the Jamesville Sportman’s Club for many years and played on the Men’s Softball Team, where he was nicknamed “Spider Legs.”

Daniel enjoyed woodworking. He built many things for his family including decorative shelves, benches, American flags and even rocking horses for his grandchildren. He loved reading and visiting with his children and grandchildren. If you ever needed to get ahold of him in the morning, you could find him at Ruston’s Diner or Cooker’s Garage. We will always remember his great big hugs, his laugh, his sense of humor and all his funny faces. He could always get everyone laughing.

Daniel is predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Kathleen (Ducar) and his brother, Robert “Buddy” Bates, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia (Mick) McKenzie, Laurie (Michael) Godin, Tammy (Daniel) Petersen; son, Daniel (Corinn) Bates, Jr.; sister, Nancy (Ron) Jones; brother, Michael Flaherty; sister in law, Charlene Bates Furbush; step-mother, Augusta Bates; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be January 24, from 4-7 p.m. at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St. A graveside service will be January 25, at 11:00 a.m., at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
