Obituary for Daniel P. Hughes

Daniel P. Hughes, 35, passed away on October 27th surrounded by his family at Upstate Hospital. Dan was severely injured in a traffic accident on October 24th.

Dan was born in Syracuse NY on July 19th, 1984 to David (Vera) and Anne Hughes. Dan is survived by his mother and father; sisters, Laura Muraco (John), Marita Hughes and Ellison Hughes; many aunts and uncles, cousins and his beloved niece, Rosemaria. While growing up in Fayetteville, Dan enjoyed countless family celebrations with cousins, along with snowboarding, trips to Green Lakes, summers at Thousand Island Park and numerous seasonal gatherings at the Gridley Farm in Manlius.

Dan was a member of the Fayetteville-Manlius High School class of 2002. While in high school, Dan played varsity football as a defensive end for the Hornets. After high school, Dan went on to play football at Hudson Valley Community College for two years and received a scholarship to play football as a defensive end and linebacker for Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Immediately after college, Danny competed with Golden Gloves amateur boxing in the Metro New York area.

It was playing football that Dan excelled at strength training, fitness, and nutrition, leading to a career as a self-employed personal trainer in Manhattan for several years after college. After working in New York City, Dan returned to Syracuse and continued his studies in anatomy and physical training. He will be most remembered by his personal training clients and family as a caring, supportive, and highly motivational individual. Dan brought his love of people and passion to each endeavor, and he will be missed by all he touched.

Six years ago Dan was diagnosed with Bipolar 2, and life became more challenging as the illness progressed. The family would like to thank all those who were part of Dan's counseling and therapy over the past several years. In death, Danny gave the gift of life to several organ transplant recipients, demonstrating his selflessness and willingness to help others in need.

The Hughes family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Upstate Surgical Intensive Care Unit for their care and guidance. The medical care and understanding they provided were invaluable to the family during Danny's stay at Upstate University Hospital.

Family and friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, November 1st at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 am on Saturday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. Burial will be in Fayetteville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you consider a gift in Danny's memory to the Upstate Foundation Inc. 750 E. Adams Street CAB326 Syracuse, NY 13210 or to any mental health or organ transplant organization of your choosing.
