Obituary for Dr. Leo V. Gould

Dr. Leo V. Gould passed away in his sleep on January 30th at age 93.  He was a Faculty Radiologist at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY (UMC) from 1969 to 2013, including work at the Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital and the Manlius Women’s Imaging Center.  For over 64 years, he was happily married to the former Eileen Allen until her passing last November.

Leo was born and raised in Liverpool, England, the son of Vincent J. and Anne M. Gould.  His early interests included going to films like Flash Gordon serials, playing rugby, and riding his Panther motorcycle.

After graduating from Liverpool University Medical School in 1952, he worked as a general medicine house officer in several Liverpool area hospitals.  From 1953 to 1955, Leo served as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, where his duties ranged from caring for officers’ wives and children to seeing drunk and disorderly soldiers in Wormwood Scrubs Prison.  He received a diploma in Diagnostic Radiology from the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1958.

Leo and Eileen married in 1957 and raised three sons.  In the 1960’s he was a consultant Radiologist at several Manchester hospitals until 1969, when the Gould family moved to Fayetteville, NY.  Leo enjoyed practicing Radiology and teaching at UMC until retiring at age 82.  He co-authored numerous published medical articles and gave research presentations and lectures at medical meetings.  He never stopped searching for information and specialist advice on caring for his son Andrew’s severe skin disease.

Leo enjoyed being with his family, walking in Green Lakes Park, sailing on Oneida Lake, art, reading, travel and collecting antique radios.  He was a member of the British Medical Association, the Onondaga County Medical Society, and the United University Professions union.  Leo and Eileen were active in the English Speaking Union Syracuse Chapter.

In addition to his beloved wife, Eileen, he was predeceased by his parents; sister, Marie Keown; son, Andrew Gould; and grandson, Daniel Gould.  He is survived and greatly missed by his sons, Dr. Peter Gould (wife, PJ) and Dr. John Gould; grandson, Matthew Gould; as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral service at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 9th at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.
