Obituary for Fred Gonroff

Fred Gonroff, 97, of Manlius, NY passed away at home on February 7, 2020. Fred will be missed by his children, Gregory, Brian, Amy Beth; his daughter-in-law, Tami; and his grandchildren. Beloved friends Brantley, Roberta, Gunner, Sue and neighbors will also miss him dearly.

Fred attended public schools in Syracuse and is a graduate of Syracuse University with a BS in Management. He retired after thirty-five years of service with General Electric’s Heavy Military Electronics Division. After retirement from GE, Fred was employed with the Syracuse City School District Evening Adult Division in the Apprentice Machine Trades Program. He was also employed on a part time basis at OCM Boces in their Business and Industry Training Program.

Fred was a veteran of World War II (1942-1945), serving in the US Army Air Corp, 15th Air Force. He flew with the 464th Bomb Group, 779th Squadron operating out of southern Italy. During his service, his bomb group received two Presidential Unit Citations for outstanding performance against the enemy. Fred is the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Fred loved being outdoors, doing yard work, biking and hiking. He was often seen biking in the Fayetteville-Manlius area and along the canal towpath. He rode his bike to Green Lakes to swim until just a few years ago.
