Obituary for George F. Koenig

George Francis Koenig passed away peacefully on January 30th at The Nottingham nursing home at the age of 88.  George was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Helen and George Koenig.  He attended Brooklyn Technical Institute and was enlisted in the United States Marine Corp as a refrigeration specialist from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953.

George married the love of his life, Joan E. Mullins, on September 10, 1955.  They began their 65 year marriage in Fall River, MA and eventually relocated to Syracuse NY where George launched his manufacturers representative business, Syracuse Thermal Products Inc.,  which is now run by his two sons, Jack and Kevin Koenig.

George had a love for woodworking and golf throughout his retirement years and rarely sat still.  He was always a joker and was known for being full of wit wherever he went.  He affectionately referred to all of the nurses and staff as “Love” in the hospital and the nursing home.  George was also a huge sports fan and especially enjoyed Syracuse University football and basketball games.

His seven grand children were his pride and joy, and he was lucky enough to meet his new great-grandson, George, who was born 3 months ago.

George is survived by his wife, Joan; his brother, William Koenig; his four children, Dianne Jabbour, Jack Koenig, Kevin Koenig and his wife, Ellen, Mary Hakim and her husband, Paul; his seven grandchildren, Kristin, Kyle and Lyndsey Koenig, Meghan Cahill and her husband, Andrew, Nicholas and Tori Hakim, Mikey Jabbour; and his great-grandson, George Cahill. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Elizabeth Morris in 2019.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

A Mass celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, February 1st at 10 am at Holy Cross Church 4112 E. Genesee St, DeWitt.
