Obituary for Irene Campbell Côté

Irene Campbell Côté died at age 96 in her Syracuse, NY home on November 23, 2021. She was born in Gouldsboro, Maine on June 14, 1925. Following her elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse, she left home to attend Stearns High School in Millinocket, ME, graduating in 1943. She then attended the University of Maine in Orono, graduating with a B.A. in English in 1947. There she met and married Wilfred A. Côté, Jr. after he returned from Europe, where he served in the U. S. Army during World War II. They settled in Syracuse, NY in 1950, where they spent the remainder of their 64 years of marriage. Together, they travelled widely, visiting six continents. Nonetheless, they frequently returned to her parents’ farm in downeast Maine, where her ashes will be buried next to those of her husband, who died in 2012.

She was a voracious reader, with a keen interest in history, and an avid fan of Syracuse University sports.

She is survived by 5 children, Wilfred III (Judith) of Milford, OH, Peter (Gayle) of Ephrata, PA, Aline Côté Kawaler (Michael) of Lebanon, PA, Denise Côté-Arsenault (Peter) of St. Louis, MO, and Matthew (Jennifer Koviach-Côté) of Hebron, ME; as well as by 13 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at a later time at the Syracuse University Catholic Center.
