Obituary for James M. Ryan

James M. Ryan, 89, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 2nd at Aaron Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairport, NY. Jim was born November 1, 1931 in Plains, PA. and graduated from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He served as a Sgt. in the Army during the Korean War era. After his service to the country, he married the love of his life, Joyce, and relocated to Endicott, NY. Jim was employed by IBM Federal Systems Division in Owego, NY as a subcontract procurement manager, in defense and space programs, for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

Jim was an avid history buff, reader, and a financial aficionado. He and Joyce were longtime parishioners of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, NY. Jim volunteered for the Board of Elections, among other organizations.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Peter Ryan of Plains, PA, and two brothers, Joseph Ryan of Syracuse NY, and Paul Ryan of Virginia Beach, VA.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce (Conway) Ryan; daughter, Marijoyce Ryan Maguire (Richard) of Rochester, NY; three sons, James Ryan (Denneva Calkins) of Syracuse, NY; Michael Ryan (Jan Blahut) of West Chester, PA; and Christopher Ryan (Peggy Walsh) of Port Washington, NY; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a private Mass at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, NY. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DeWitt, NY.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff of Brentland Woods of the Episcopal Senior Life Communities in Henrietta, NY, Creekstone Memory Care of the Rochester Presbyterian Home in Fairport, NY, and Aaron Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairport, NY. Each facility exceeded our expectations in providing a warm, welcoming, and caring environment for our parents, over the last several years.
