Obituary for John Edward Hogan Jr.

Jack Hogan, 95, of Manlius, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022. Born John E. Hogan, Jr. on Jan. 1, 1927, in Syracuse, Jack was the eldest of 15 children of the late John Hogan and Vivian Ransier Hogan.

Jack graduated from Central High School in Syracuse and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Jack was a WWII veteran, serving with the US Army and the Coast Guard.

Jack had a varied and successful career with General Electric for 32 years. He started with GE in Syracuse and went on to work in Houston during the construction of NASA’s facilities there. Jack later worked on projects for GE in Washington, D.C., and at the US Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany, where he was involved in radar and communications deployment at various locations throughout Europe.

While working overseas Jack met his beautiful bride-to-be, Bente Margrethe Dagmar Nielson of Denmark, who was a member of the Danish Resistance force during WWII. They traveled extensively in Europe, and when they returned to the US, they were married in Fayetteville, NY, in October 1960. The couple then moved to California, where Jack was an engineer and director of General Electric’s Nuclear Energy Operations Computer Science Laboratory in San Jose.

After his beloved wife Bente passed away in Santa Cruz, CA, Jack returned to family and friends in Central New York, where he enjoyed a great social life in retirement. He was an engaging storyteller who loved a good laugh and enjoyed music, especially Frank Sinatra. Jack played golf in the Eastwood Golf League for more than 20 years and had a lifetime handicap of 9. He rebuilt and restored vintage vehicles. He had a great interest in genealogy and traced the history of his ancestors. Jack’s constant companion and sweetheart of his later years was his standard French poodle, Jasmine.

Jack was predeceased by many family members, including his siblings, William (Bill) Hogan, Gordon (Corky) Hogan, Gerald (Jerry) Hogan, Mary Pat Hogan, Bruce Hogan, Sally Plunkett, Sharon Phillips, Hugh Hogan, Marcia Carfagno, Christine (Barnard) Porter and Kent (Kenny) Hogan. Jack is survived by his brothers, Terence Hogan of Syracuse, Lance Hogan of Pennsylvania, and his sister, Kathy Ptak of Oswego and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 10 am to noon on Monday, Sept. 19, at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville, NY 13066. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt.

Jack was a kind, intelligent, and gentle soul, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jack’s memory to a charity of your choice.
