Obituary

John Goodwin Porcello, 62, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020, at the Onondaga Center in Minoa, after a ten month illness. John was born in Syracuse, New York, and graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1975. He attended SUNY Potsdam, graduating in 1979 with a degree in English Literature. He had a variety of jobs during his lifetime and for the last seventeen years was employed by BJ’s Wholesale Club in East Syracuse.

John’s true vocation and lifelong love was his music. Throughout his adulthood he played guitar in a number of local bands, including Dr. Mojo, The Dead Bachelors, Front Street and Chapter XI. Not only did he love the music for itself; he also loved the community of fellow musicians.

John was predeceased by his parents Barbara G. and Joseph A. Porcello. He is survived by his two brothers, Robert M. Porcello (Susan) and Joseph E. Porcello (Karen); nieces and nephews, Rebecca J. McGinnis, Joseph J. Porcello, Michael M. Porcello, Elisabeth M. Porcello and Heather N. Kassel; six great-nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and many wonderful lifelong friends.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 29, from 2 to 4 pm, at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 East Genesee Street, Fayetteville. A service will immediately follow the calling hours.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Benny Wong and the wonderful staff at Hematology - Oncology Associates of CNY, whose efforts and loving care gave John the gift of six extra months of precious life.

Contributions may be made in John’s memory to The Melanoma Research Alliance, 730 15th Street, NW, Fourth Floor, Washington DC 20005, or online at www.curemelanoma.org/tribute.
