Jon Curtis Nelson, 84, of Manlius, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 10th with his loving wife by his side.

Jon was born in Mt. Vernon, NY. He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1955. He then attended General Motors Institute of Technology in Michigan and Syracuse University where he graduated in 1960. Jon married his wife and best friend, Jane Moshier, in 1959. They were happily married for 61 years. In the early years of his career, Jon worked at JW Allman where he was a successful equipment salesman. He then worked at Mik-Lin Systems as the Purchasing Manager where he built many strong relationships with his customers and suppliers. This invaluable experience enabled him to begin his lifelong dream of opening his own electrical distributorship, Jonnel Company in 1991. Through his incredibly hard work ethic, unwavering positivity and indomitable spirit Jon was able to build a very successful business that is still family owned and operated.

Jon had many interests and hobbies. He initiated the renewal of the Soap Box Derby under the direction of the Syracuse Jay Cees. He was an active member of the Century Club of Syracuse, Dewitt Community Church and the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). Jon enjoyed working in his yard, woodworking in his shop and repairing anything and everything. Most of all, Jon enjoyed spending time with his family. He adored his grandchildren.

Jon was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Mildred Nelson. Surviving him are his beloved wife, Jane; son, James of Fayetteville; daughter, Jennifer (Bill) Coleman of Fayetteville; sisters, Betsy Stone of the Nottingham, Susan Deborah Roesgen of Orchard Park, NY; grandchildren, Deven, Jason, Casey and Lillian Coleman; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, October 17th from 2-4 pm at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville with a private family funeral service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Dewitt Community Church at 3600 Erie Blvd. East, Syracuse, NY 13214 or The Food Bank of CNY at 7066 Interstate Island Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13209.

Sending condolences and respect to Jane, Jimmy, and Jennifer during this difficult time. I have fun memories of Jon helping me with the pinewood derby during Boy Scout days, he was a generous man and I’m very thankful to have known him.
