Obituary for Josy McGinn

Josy McGinn, 82, of Fayetteville passed away peacefully at home on Thursday surrounded by her family. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Josy moved to the US with her family at age 15. She majored in French at LeMoyne College and became one of that college’s first female teachers. She retired from Syracuse University where she was the French Language Coordinator for more than 20 years. An active member of many community organizations, Josy was a member of the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music, Fayetteville Garden Club, Fayetteville Free Library and Coterie. She was the host of WCNY’s Music Before Bach.   

Known for her sharp mind, generosity, love of reading, beautiful gardens, and incredible laugh, Josy met her husband, Larry, while she was attending graduate school at Columbia University. Together they raised their three children in Fayetteville. 

Josy was predeceased by her husband, Larry McGinn; her parents, Antoon vanHal and Philomene Jassens; sister, Jacky Karpinski and nephew, Mark Karpinski.

She is survived by her children, Kuki (Eric) Haines , Sean McGinn and Sasha (Kevin) Sweeney; grandchildren, Michael Shea Sweeney and Finn Sweeney; niece, Jill (Lisa) Karpinski and great nephew, Nicolas Karpinski.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4-7 pm at the Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
