Obituary for Margaret J. Bills

Margaret Jeannine Bills passed away peacefully on March 30th at The Nottingham in Jamesville NY. She was the middle child born to the late Max Jesse Hotchkiss and Dorothy Leah Hotchkiss in Meadville, PA on October 7th, 1931. Marg married her late husband, Jack Bills, in 1952 and became a teletypist while Jack served in the Navy during the Korean War. Upon his return, they started a family and moved east to the New England area. Some of their happiest years were while living in Mattapoisett, MA, where they built a beautiful home and raised their 2 children. In later years they moved to Skaneateles, NY where Marg remained after Jack’s death in 2009 until moving to The Nottingham in 2017.

Marg was a beautiful, petite woman who took great care in her appearance and had a keen eye for quality. She enjoyed cooking and interior decorating and was very social, having an immense curiosity in people and culture in general. She had a question and a smile for everyone who entered her home. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” was one of her favorite quotes and parenting tools. She prided herself on her homemaking skills and was a gourmet cook who mastered the art of dessert making, becoming famous among her friends and family for her delicate cookies and sensational pies. Marg was a very skilled duplicate bridge player and played right up until her health began to fail. She also had a love for horses and rode in her younger years.

Marg was predeceased by her husband, Jack, and her older brother Howard. She is survived by her son, Andrew (Jerri) Bills; her daughter, Valerie (Wes) Johnson; her sister, Shirley Radaker; her grandson, Andrew (Kerry) Bills, Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Reese Bills; as well as several nieces and nephews.

There will be no services. The immediate family will be gathering later this year to celebrate Marg’s life.

Contributions may be made in her name to Sunshine Horses, 3721 Verplank Rd., Clay, NY 13041 or Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse NY 13208.

Marg’s family would like to thank the staff and health care providers at The Nottingham as well as the staff and home health care aides at Constant Care 247 for the loving care they provided over the past several years.
