Obituary for Margaret K. Monmonier

Margaret K. Monmonier, of DeWitt, NY, died on November 9, 2022, at the age of 77 after a three-plus-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Marge was born in 1944 to Albert and Bernice Kollner of Baltimore, MD. She was the youngest of three children. Her mother died when she was five months old, and she spent much of her early life with her great aunt and uncle, Sophie and Peter Jawarz, and her aunt and uncle, Lena and Edward Kollner. She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School in Baltimore and worked for an insurance company for several years after graduating from Patterson Park High School. Marge met Mark at a dance in 1964; they married on September 4, 1965, and moved to State College, PA, where Mark attended graduate school. They lived in Narragansett, RI, 1969–70, and Albany, NY, 1970–73, before moving to Syracuse, and to DeWitt in 1978. Their adopted daughter, Jo Kerry, born in Korea in 1978, joined the family in 1982.

Marge was a committed mother and an active communicant of All Saints Roman Catholic Parish in Syracuse, and its predecessor before consolidation, the Church of St. Therese. She enjoyed cats, house plants, cookbooks, books about plants and wildlife, short courses at University College, road trips with Mark and Jo, and occasional trips to Europe for international cartography meetings.

Marge was an advocate of animal welfare organizations, especially the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) and the Central New York Cat Coalition. After several years of declining memory, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2019 and became a member of the Peregrine Senior Living community at Onondaga Hill in March 2022.

Preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Albert Kollner, Marge is survived by her husband, Mark; daughter, Jo (Anthony Evangelista); brothers, John (Mary) and Raymond (Antoinette) Kollner; and grandsons, Camden and Cooper.

A memorial mass celebrating Marge's life will be held at All Saints Parish, 1340 Lancaster Ave, Syracuse, NY, at 11:00 am on January 21, 2023. The family will be greeting guests after the service with light refreshments in the church. Live streaming of the service is available at allsaintssyracuse.org.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter.
