Obituary

Mariya Kazachenko, 89, of Fayetteville, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Crouse Hospital, comforted by her family. Mariya was born on March 27, 1931 in Kazakhstan, where she spent her difficult adolescent years affected by World War II. She lost her father to the war when she was 10 and had to help her mom tending to the house and siblings. After graduating from the Agricultural college, she started her career surveying farm lands and growing seeds in the lab. At that time, she married her husband of 67 years, Erikh Fresher. Their adventures continued and family grew bigger as they moved to different places in Kazakhstan. After long hours of work, they liked getting together with their friends for dancing and singing. Prior to her retirement, Mariya worked for many years as an insurance agent. Mariya and Erikh moved to the United States in September 1995 to be closer to their daughter and settled in Ithaca, NY. They later moved to Fayetteville, NY. They were members of the Slavic Full Gospel Church in Syracuse. Mariya was a colon cancer survivor.

Mariya was a kind, caring, and wonderful person, a true backbone of her family. She was loved by everyone she touched, and pets were drawn to her. She enjoyed dancing, singing, grew the best berries and vegetables in her large garden, cooked special Russian foods for everyone, and loved fishing. She always kept herself busy making crochet crafts, cross-stitching, and knitting. She gave away all the things she made to everyone who knew her. Despite her illnesses, she was always positive, with a radiant smile and open heart. She was a role model to all her children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed.

She was predeceased by her mother, Akulina; father, Joseph; brothers, Ivan and Peter; sister, Anna; and mother-in-law, Paulina.

Surviving are her husband, Erikh Fresher; daughters, Luba (Fedor) Morenkova, Tatyana (Sergey) Zarubin, Irina (Anatoliy) Tarasevich; her grandchildren, Nikolai (Elena) Morenkov, Maria (Rasheed) Yumagulova, Yuliya (Timothy) Zarubina-Brill, Peter (Toni) Zarubin, Dmitriy (Jennifer) Tarasevich, and Kristina Tarasevich. Also surviving are her 10 great-grandchildren, Ivan, Anton, Neeka, Sophia, Vari, Allison, Jayden, Lucas, Oliver, and Alex.

Calling hours will be Friday from 5-7 at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. A service will be Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango.

Due to the pandemic and limited seating, the Saturday service will be by invitation only.
