Obituary for Mark W. Wasmund

Mark William Wasmund passed away at home in Syracuse, NY, on the morning of May 11, 2021 with his family by his side. Mark, the son of Paul H. Wasmund Jr. and Jeannette M. Wasmund (nee Wieboldt), was born in Woodhaven, NY on March 18, 1959 and grew up in Downingtown, PA.

Despite the snow and, in his view, unacceptable winter weather, Mark was a resident of the Syracuse area for nearly 50 years. He was a graduate of the Syracuse University class of ‘81 and a member of the Syracuse University College of Law class of ’84. He resided with his family of seven in the Fabius-Pompey area for 20 years and was an avid supporter of the community. Through strict logistical prowess, he always went above and beyond to be there for his five kids through their F-P athletic endeavors, and continued his dedication as an assistant coach for the F-P Varsity boys basketball team for over 15 years. Mark’s love of basketball and coaching carried on as a volunteer coach with the Central Western AAU basketball program and playing, as he would say, “old man ball” every weekend wherever he could find it.

He began his career as the Risk Manager for the city of Myrtle Beach, SC and went on to private practice in 1986 before joining the Mackenzie Hughes Law Firm in Syracuse for over ten years. His work was his second home and colleagues his second family. Those fortunate enough to work with him over the years know that he delivered exceptional work in the most succinct manner.

Mark served as arbitrator in the Syracuse City Court for the Onondaga County Bar Association, Treasurer and board member of the Fair Housing Council of Central New York and was a past board member of the National Kidney Foundation of CNY.

An avid bike rider, Mark enjoyed long early morning rides along the roads of his lifelong family home in Southold, NY. He also enjoyed golfing, sitting by the water in Sarasota, FL and catching up on historical biographies. Perhaps his most loyal pastime passion lies in his lifelong devotion to his (somewhat disappointing) baseball team The New York Mets.

Mark is survived by his wife, Maryam El-Hindi Wasmund; his children, John Wasmund, Paul (Jane Erickson) Wasmund, Elizabeth (Marc Hann) Wasmund, Peter (Charlotte Alexander) Wasmund, Mark (Emily O’Gorman) Wasmund; along with his beloved brother, Paul G. Wasmund (Wayne Wilson). Although much too brief, his memory will also live on with his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Ruth Wasmund and Faye Hann. In addition, he is also survived by his most adored father-in-law, Ahmad El-Hindi.

We will always remember his valiant spirit, wit and dry sense of humor evident until his final moments and also cherish his never-ending loyalty and superior work ethic. True to his no-nonsense tone, his token send - off each morning was “have a productive day.” His family will carry this notion into all future endeavors and may you all do the same.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Mark on Friday June 11th at 1 pm at Hendricks Chapel. Syracuse University/Hendricks Chapel COVID protocol and information about parking are located in service notes below.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made payable to the Fabius-Pompey Schools at 1211 Mill Street, Fabius, New York 13063. Please memo Mark W. Wasmund Scholarship Fund.
