Obituary for Mary Haswell

Mary Sawyer Haswell, age 88 of Pompey, NY passed away peacefully in the comfort of her daughter’s home in Rhode Island on February 3, 2020. Mary was born on January 22, 1932 in Syracuse, NY to Helen Kimball Sawyer and Franklin Sawyer, and felt blessed to share her childhood with her big brother Russell Sawyer.

After graduating from Nottingham High School in 1950 she attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1954. Mary later obtained her Master’s in Education from Syracuse University. She was an elementary school teacher at Fabius-Pompey Central Schools for 37 years.

Mary was the very proud mother of five children; Russell (Sandy), Richard (Sheila), Scott (Shari), Tracy, and Peter (Karen). She was a proud grandmother of 9: Mike (Kristin), Nate (Tracy), Derek (Tess), Jessica (Jimson), Ryan, Margot, Ethan, Danielle, and Christopher, and a great grandmother of 10 (soon to be 11).

She was an avid knitter and kept her family well supplied with hand-knit sweaters, Christmas stockings, scarves, and blankets. She was a voracious reader especially a good mystery and could often be found at the Manlius Library. She lived most of her years in Pompey NY; a “city girl” who learned to love the country. Mary thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge and was a devoted member of the bridge club at the Manlius Senior Center. She kept in contact with the many friends she made over the years by writing letters in her impeccable handwriting, or by phone as she always enjoyed a good chat. She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. That love of travel took her to Europe while in college, Hawaii, Ireland, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and more recently to see family in California and Maine.

Mary has many fabulous friends who were like family and she was blessed to share her laughter, affection, and feisty nature with all the people she loved and who loved her.

Calling hours will be from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Rd, Manlius, NY 13104.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Helping Hounds, the Manlius Senior Center (Bridge Group), or the Manlius Library.
