Obituary for Mary "Marion" Wendel

Mary (Marion) M. Wendel of Chatham, NJ, and formerly of Manlius, NY, passed away peacefully at her home in Juniper Village on July 5, 2019. She was a caring mother and grandmother (called “Muzzie”) who was known for her beautiful gentle smile, quick wit, sense of style and her compassion for all. She loved children and had five of her own. Marion was also a beloved teacher for over 35 years and retired in 1991 after twenty-six years as an elementary school educator at Bolivar Road in Chittenango, NY.

Marion was born in New York City in 1926. She was a lifelong learner who graduated from Hunter College and received her master’s degree from SUNY Cortland. When not in the classroom, you would often find Marion listening to music, reading books, writing letters, eating anything chocolate and rooting for the Yankees and Syracuse University sports. She always found time to walk with friends even while being a busy mother of five.

Known as a gentle but firm teacher and mother, Marion’s greatest attributes were her generosity, compassion and dedication as both a mother and an educator. Her independence and sense of adventure led her to meet and marry the love of her life, Donald, her husband of 50 years. After graduating from college both met while working on Grace Line Cruise ships that sailed from New York City to South America. Their love of travel and experiencing different countries, cultures and people continued throughout their long marriage.

Those that passed before Marion are her husband, Donald E. Wendel; her parents, Martin J and Rose Walsh; and her sister, Patricia Ciesielski. She is survived by her five children, Mike Wendel (Nancy), Patricia McClary, Robert Wendel, Nancy Conrad (Jim), Caron Chance (Kenny); along with her brother, Col. John P. Walsh; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in New Jersey at St. Vincent Martyr, Madison, NJ on Friday July 12, at 11am.

A second service will be in Manlius NY on Tuesday, July 16th. A calling hour will be at Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Rd., Manlius from 9:30-10:30am followed by a memorial service at St. Ann’s Church in Manlius at 11am. Marion will be laid to rest in Manlius Village Cemetery next to her husband.
