Obituary for Olivia T. Opello

 

     Olivia T. Opello, who resided in the town of DeWitt, NY, died unexpectedly on August 18, 2022 from a heart attack.  She was 80 years old at the time of her death.  She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Walter Opello; daughter, Katherine Opello and grandson, Alec Giblet Opello, both of Mont Saint Guibert, Belgium; and brother, John Teter of Lexington, KY.

     Olivia was born on September 13, 1941 in Mansfield, Ohio, the daughter of Marshall Paul Teter and Mary C. Carlivaris of Galion, OH.  She attended primary and secondary schools in Iberia, OH and Ohio State University, from which she graduated in 1964 with a B.A. degree in international relations.  After completing her degree she was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and attended the Women’s Officer Basic Course in Quantico, VA.  Her first duty assignment was as a top secret documents control officer at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, NC.  She was promoted to 1st Lt. in December 1965.  It was at Camp Lejeune that she met 1st Lt. Walter C. Opello, Jr., who became her husband on Jun e 4, 1966.

     Having completed their military obligations, the couple moved to Boulder, CO where Olivia became the administrative assistant to the dean of the graduate school of the University of Colorado.  During that time Olivia studied library science in the evenings at the University of Denver.  After receiving her MLS from DU in 1969, she was employed as a science librarian at the National Bureau of Standards, Boulder Laboratories.

     In 1973 the couple moved to the State University of New York, Albany where Olivia was employed as a reference librarian.  In 1976, the moved to the University of Mississippi where her husband taught political sciene and she was a reference librarian.

     In 1987 Olivia moved with her husband to Upstate NY, he taught at SUNY Oswego and she was a reference librarian at the Onondaga County Public Library.  Before her retirement from OCPL in 2010, she rose to the rank of librarian 3 and headed the Beachamp and Hazard branches.

     A calling hour will be from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, August 23 at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.  The service will follow the calling hour.

     Olivia will be interred in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, NY. 

     In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cornell University, in her name are appreciated.
