Obituary for Penelope Ann Smart

Penelope Ann (Paris) Smart passed away from complications of COVID-19 at the Iroquois Nursing Home, Jamesville, NY on December 23, 2020. Born on September 6, 1935, Penny was the eldest child of Charles and Eleanora (Meaney) Paris of Broadalbin, NY.   She completed a 2-year degree in Secretarial Sciences at Bryant College in 1955 and enjoyed working in legal offices as a single young woman.   She married Robert J. Smart of Amsterdam, NY on November 30, 1957.

Based in Delmar, NY, Penny and Bob raised 3 sons and 2 dogs, seeing all through sickness and health.   Penny had a special talent for home interior design and worked diligently on finding and refinishing interesting furniture in her spare time.  She enjoyed trying out different design motifs, shocking a son or two with wallpaper on the ceiling of a half-bath. A long-time book lover, in later life she relished hours spent in a bookstore, choosing her next novel or biography adventure.  She and Bob moved to Manlius, NY in 1984 when Bob’s division of the phone company was relocated to Syracuse.  Penny worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses until retirement.

She is survived by sons, Joseph (Allison) of Santa Ana, CA and James (Lea) of Jacksonville, FL.  Husband, Bob, predeceased her in January 2020, and son, Jonathan(Tracy) in 2015.  In addition to her children, she leaves behind numerous grandchildren: Valerie, Jessica, Olivia, Miles, Nicole and Steven. Her siblings also mourn her passing: William (Joan) Paris of Lansdale, PA, Ellen (Phillip) Goguen of Grafton, MA and Margaret Paris of Slingerlands, NY.

In light of the pandemic, a memorial has been postponed until it is safe for family and friends to gather.
