Obituary for Peter M. Becker, M.D.
Peter M. Becker, M.D. of Fayetteville, NY, an avid lover of learning and aspiring master of all he learned about the world, politics, nature and people, died Wednesday, May 29, 2019. He was a voracious reader who had a passion for hearing and sharing different perspectives. He was a natural jokester who would reliably laugh at his own jokes and playfully “poke” others to initiate debate on current events. He consistently advocated for inclusion, fairness and compassion.
Peter was born in Utica, NY to John A. and Barbara (Krayka) Becker. Raised by teachers, his thirst for knowledge was reflected in his educational path. He was a graduate of Jamesville-Dewitt High School, Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School.
Board certified in internal and geriatric medicine, he spent most of his career as a practicing physician with CNY Internists and Hutchings Psychiatric Center, and as Medical Director of Van Duyn Home and Hospital while it was owned by Onondaga County. He retired in 2014 but his passion for his work brought him back into the workforce shortly thereafter. At the time of his passing, he held part-time positions at PACE CNY and Clarity Clinical Research. He loved his work, and the people he worked with and cared for knew his care and advisement was of the highest quality.
Peter had a love of sports, especially Syracuse University basketball, football and lacrosse. As a season ticket holder, you would often see him attending Orange basketball games at the Dome with his dear friend Stan Wojciechowski.
His leadership was felt throughout the community as the founding president of the Jamesville Dewitt Youth Athletic Association (JDYAA) where he coached youth basketball and lacrosse. He was known for his bellowing voice and his fairness to all. His players will remember his love for bounce passes and his introduction of the “Mad Dog” award for the lacrosse player on his team earning the most ground balls. Never concerned by a loss, he always framed it as a way to learn and grow as a team.
Peter’s legacy is best seen in the redesign of the family cottage, which could only be realized with the help of his best friend Jay DiFulvio.
Skaneateles Lake was where Peter met his perfect partner and wife of 37 years, Annette Lindemer, whose family camp was just two doors down from his. They both loved the lake and you could often see them rowing together or just enjoying days with family and friends. It was too soon that he died suddenly at the age of 67 while rowing on the lake he loved.
Loved ones that cleared the path for Peter are his father John and his beloved son Mark. He is survived by his mother Barbara; his wife Annette; his sons Eric and Brian (Meaghan) and grandson Theodore; brother Gary (Bernadette); and sister Sharon Rogner.
Calling hours will be held at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 East Genesee St. Fayetteville, NY on Tuesday, June 4, from 4-7 PM. A memorial service will be held at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 96 East Genesee St., Skaneateles, NY on Wednesday, June 5, at 11 AM.
