Obituary for Raymond G. Haynes
Raymond George “Skip” Haynes, 85, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019. He was born in Syracuse, NY, to Nettie and Charles Haynes. After graduating from Eastwood High School and Brockport State College, he joined the Marine Corps, becoming a helicopter pilot and ending his respected military career as a Captain. Throughout his high school and college career, Ray played both baseball and football, and continued playing baseball for the Marine Corps team. During his time in service and while stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, he met his beloved wife, Peggy. The two married shortly thereafter, traveling around the country to Hawaii and Alaska and eventually settling in Syracuse, NY to build a loving home together and raise their four children.
Ray was an award-winning State Farm agent for 33 years, beloved by his clients and community. He coached the East Syracuse-Minoa Eagles Pop Warner football team for many years, achieving multiple championships along the way. He also sat on the East Syracuse-Minoa school board and was a longtime member of Bellevue Country Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Peggy; sister Shirley Ashworth; sisters-in-law Betty and Jewel; daughter Tami West and her children Nathaniel, Katherine, and Rose; daughter Cindy Rae Jackson (Kevin) and their children Jennifer (Bret), Kevin, and Cole Raymond; daughter Kim Aromando (Joseph) and their children Alexander (Jessica), Samantha Rae (David), Joseph, and Madison; son Raymond “Skip” Haynes, Jr. (Carol) and their children Connor Raymond and Corey; great-grandchildren Annabelle, Elijah, Sophie, Carter Raymond, Charleigh, and Kaia Rae; and many loving nieces and nephews.
To know Ray was to love him. His joyful presence, magnetic energy, sharp wit, and fierce love for his family will be remembered and forever cherished by all who knew him. Ray’s spirit of service, kindness, and compassion will live on through his family and friends – who will never forget the way his blue eyes twinkled each time he laughed. Keep shootin’ it up there, dad.
The family invites you to join them in celebrating Ray’s incredible life and memory at Schepp Family Funeral Home 6530 Schepp’s Corners Rd., Minoa, NY on Monday, July 8 from 4-7pm. Funeral services will be held at First United Church in East Syracuse on Tuesday, July 9 at 11am. Ray will be laid to rest at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
