Robert Francis McCarthy passed away in Fayetteville, NY on September 16, 2022 at the age of 98. He was the loving father of Leland McCarthy (recently deceased) (Anne McCarthy), Kenneth (Marianne) McCarthy, Sharon (Christopher) Shea and Timothy (Jessica) McCarthy; grandfather of 13; great-grandfather of 21; and great-great grandfather of 7. He was the son of George and Blanche (Johnson) McCarthy and big brother to Lois McCarthy (deceased). He was married to his beloved Dorothy for 58 years before she sadly passed away in 2005.
“Big Bob”, “Mac” or “Ozzie” was born on March 26, 1924 in Syracuse, NY and attended St. Anthony’s High School. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII. He served as a police officer in the Syracuse Police Department for 36 years, ascending to Captain of Detectives where he was also known for his “Big Mac Award”, before retiring in 1979.
He loved his family and, as those who knew him best can confirm, his love for playing pitch was a close second! He was also a talented carpenter who built his own homes and was always happy to help his children with theirs if they needed a repair. He was a realtor in NY and Florida where he moved after retiring and was a member of the American Legion, Kiwanis Club and a Coast Guard Auxiliary Member.
He was an avid boater and he, Dorothy, family and friends spent countless weekends on their boat enjoying their favorite places in the Thousand Islands. He loved his dogs, enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and taught his sons their love for the outdoors. He loved his Country, serving in the Navy and Police Department, and he loved being an Irishman.
He was a force in the lives of everyone he touched, whether they liked it or not! And, although he had a very long and wonderful life, he will be sorely missed.
There will be a celebration of his life for close friends and family to be determined.
