Obituary for Sarah Tomeny

Our family lost our beloved mother and grandmother Sarah (Corsello) Tomeny on January 6, 2020 when she departed this life for the next and she will be missed beyond words.

Born in 1927, she was a lifelong resident of Syracuse. She married her husband Bud in 1947 in St. John’s The Evangelist Church, a union that would last 68 years. When her youngest child finished grade school Sarah returned to work retiring in 1985 from the Syracuse Housing Authority. After retiring, she enjoyed being a stay at home Grandma caring for her grandchildren through preschool to kindergarten.

She and her husband were very active socially and loved to travel but family was always their main focus. They truly loved being grandparents and spending time with the kids was their greatest joy. She also enjoyed sports and beating anyone she could at any card game they played!
One of her favorite places was Webster Pond where she and Bud took their grandchildren when they were young. She had such a special fondness for children that even in her later years she still loved going to the Pond because she delighted in watching the children there feed the ducks. Most people who knew her would likely say she, herself, was a child at heart.

Always the extrovert, she was largely silenced by a stroke the last decade of her life. For someone who loved socializing she adapted with remarkable courage and never lost her sense of humor. She always found a way to convey her love and appreciation with her smile or holding your hand.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to a select group of special aides and nurses that helped care for her over the last several years. We’ve thanked each of you personally on many occasions and would like you to know that Sarah loved you.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles “Bud”, son Greg and sister Dolores Myers.
Left to carry her memory in our hearts is her daughter, Sharon, sons: Chuck (Bernadette) and Steve (Teresa), grandchildren: John Traylor, Andrew (Mia), Tyler, Courtney and Paige Tomeny, great grandchildren: Eli and Logan and many nieces and nephews.

Family & friends may call from 4-7 pm on Thursday, January 9th at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am on Friday, January 10th at DeWitt Community Church. Burial will follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
