Obituary for Sr. Mary Harold Braungart

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities sadly announce the death of Sister Mary Harold Braungart. Sister passed away peacefully at the Franciscan Villa on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. She was 90 years of age. Sister Mary Harold was one of three children born in Syracuse to Leo Braungart and Louise Gratzer Braungart. She was a member of Assumption parish, attending grammar school there, and eventually graduating from Assumption High School. After feeling called by God to a higher service, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis where she continued her education, earning a Bachelor Degree in Education from the State College of New York at Oswego and a Masters Degree from the University of Hawaii.

Sister’s many years of ministry were primarily centered on lovingly educating children of all ages, ranging from Ginger Bread House Day Care, to grammar school and high school. She was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, serving in Catholic Schools in Syracuse, Oswego, Utica and Albany, NY, Long Beach, California, Hoboken and Riverside, New Jersey and Hilo and Honolulu, Hawaii. While in Honolulu, she ministered at St. Francis High School as Principal for a number of years.

When her years in education ended, Sister continued supporting her Community by volunteering her services at Nun Better Chocolates, a ministry she continued even after retirement to the Franciscan Villa. She was a tireless worker in God’s service.

Sister Mary Harold will be remembered for her love of God, her family, and her religious community. Her demeanor was always pleasant and cordial. She was an avid sports fan and a fierce supporter of Syracuse University teams. Sister loved going out on outings and playing pinochle. She could always be found in the activity room socializing and playing games. She will be missed.

Sister was predeceased by her parents; sister, Virginia Brunet; brother, Harold Braungart; brother-in-law, Ray Brunet; and nephews, Harold and Kenneth Brunet. She is survived by nieces, Kathleen (Jasiu) Szewczyk, Janice (Bob) Burke; nephews, Kevin Brunet, Michael (Cheryl) Brunet, Martin (Laura) Brunet; and several great nieces and nephews.

There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Franciscan Villa.

Donations may be made in Sister Mary Harold’s name to the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, Congregational Development Office, 960 James Street, Syracuse, NY 13203.
