Obituary for Stephen J. McGinnis

Stephen James McGinnis, 75, died peacefully Friday March 3, 2023.  He was born August 20, 1947 in Johnstown, PA.  He was a graduate of the Miami Military Academy and the University of Florida.  Steve served in the US Army during the Vietnam war era as a member of the Berlin Brigade with the National Security Agency. He was extremely proud of his service.  Steve finished his education at the University of Florida before relocating to the Syracuse area in 1972 to pursue a career as a home builder and land developer. Initially working with his father, Donald “Mac”

McGinnis, Steve developed several subdivisions in the Manlius area, including Landgrove, Tremain, Spyglass Hill, GlenEagle, and Arbutus Park. Steve was also a past president of The Homebuilders Association of CNY.

Away from work, Steve enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and following Syracuse and Florida sports teams.  He also enjoyed many years at the lake house on Tuscarora Lake. He was a longtime member of the Cavalry Club, winning the club championship four times, and was the founder and host of the McGinn Open. He had a passion for poker and at one point in 2005 was the top ranked online poker player in the country.  Steve was always there for his family, supporting them in whatever they did. He was a devoted husband and loving father who imparted too much knowledge upon his sons to mention here.

Steve is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Jane McGinnis; his three sons, Thomas James (Kandace) McGinnis, William Patrick (Rebecca) McGinnis, and Michael Stephen (Melissa) McGinnis; his grandchildren, Maximus, Lillian, Lukey, and Mari; and brothers Paul and David.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Heritage Loretto for providing compassionate care during his last few months.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours from 12:00 to 1:30 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.  The service will follow the calling hours.  Burial will be in Fayetteville Cemetery.
