Obituary for Stephen L. Johnson

Stephen L. Johnson, of Fayetteville, died at Upstate University Hospital on February 14, 2022.  Born in Syracuse, Steve was one of five children of William D. and Ellen C. Johnson.  He grew up on Chatham Road in the City and  spent his summers at the family cottage on Skaneateles Lake.  Steve was a graduate of Pebble Hill School where he was an outstanding student and three sport athlete.  Steve spent his undergraduate years at LeMoyne College, receiving his Bachelor of  Arts degree in 1966.  Following his father’s legal career path he attended Boston College Law School where he was a member of the law review and graduated with honors in 1969.

Steve met his future wife, Diane Ruggieri, a student at Emmanuel College in Boston, at a law school dance.  They were married in 1971 after Steve had returned to Syracuse to begin his law practice at the prestigious firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King where he spent his entire professional career.  Steve specialized in real estate development and construction law and became one of Central New York’s foremost real estate practitioners, representing a diverse clientele in their often challenging real estate projects.  Steve was a tireless worker, an impeccable draftsman, a trustworthy and skilled negotiator and an exemplary mentor to the younger lawyers who worked beside him.  He was the leader of BS&K’s Property Department for many years, and also served on the Firm’s Associate, Compensation and Management Committees.  He often received Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers annual recognitions.

Steve was active in the Bar Association and the greater Syracuse community in many roles, most prominent of which was his term as President of the Everson Museum Board of Trustees.  He devoted countless hours to  Legal Services of Central New York and the Alumni Committee of Manlius Pebble Hill School.  A natural athlete, throughout his life Steve loved playing golf and was an enjoyable partner with many fellow golfers at the Cavalry Club and Onondaga Golf and Country Club where he was a member.  He was also a member of the Century Club of Syracuse.

Whether at work or play, Steve was a man of high integrity, resilience and strong personal conviction.  He was soft spoken and conservative by nature, the perfect gentleman in word and deed, a modest and selfless professional who never sought personal  accolades, generous to others, and well liked and respected by his many friends and acquaintances. His family is comforted knowing that Steve is on the First Tee early this blue sky morning in good company.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Diane; his sister, Margaret (James D.) of Franklin MA; his sister-in-law, Kathleen Johnson of Skaneateles; his brother-in-law, J. Georg Cerf of Trenton, NJ, and a beloved niece and many nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents; his  brothers, William and Edward Johnson; his sister, Joanna Cerf; and his nephew, William “Billy” Johnson.

At Steve’s request, there are no calling hours and services will be private.
