Obituary for Thomas A. Capozzi
It is with great sorrow that the family of Thomas “Tom” Capozzi announces his passing on September 29, 2019, at the age of 67, following a brief yet courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Born in Syracuse, Tom attended St. Therese grammar school, Christian Brothers Academy, Fordham University, and LeMoyne College.
For more than 30 years, Tom led the brokerage efforts of his family’s real estate and construction business, Lewiston Properties, LLC and more recently served as a broker at Cushman & Wakefield Pyramid Brokerage Co. Tom was particularly passionate about stewarding projects that ensured affordable housing for the elderly, students, and economically challenged residents. He was also instrumental in the growth of Central New York’s commercial landscape, playing a key role in a number of significant retail developments.
In addition to his family and close friends, Tom filled his life with many things that brought him joy, including playing golf, watching golf, and talking about golf. He also enjoyed spending time at the Calvary Club, traveling, listening to great music (from Sinatra to The Stones), smoking good cigars, and an “occasional” cocktail. Tom also adored his pet boxers, Rocky and Cosmo, and their smaller sidekicks, Charlie and Henry.
Tom will be remembered for his many talents, including his quick wit and funny story telling, exhaustive attention to detail, relentless pursuit of deal-making, willingness to lend a hand – with or without a hammer in it – and sideline shouting at his daughters’ swim meets, soccer games, road races, and even dance recitals.
Tom leaves behind many who loved and cherished him – and whom he loved and cherished equally – including his wife of 37 years, Gail (Cedrone) Capozzi; daughters, Marisa (Neil) Ackerman, Lauren, and Alexa; granddaughter, Alice Olivia Ackerman; mother-in-law, Metta Cedrone; siblings, Mark (Rina), Patrick (Stephen), and Richard (Joanne); brother-in-law, Daniel Cedrone (Linda Bennett); nieces, Christina (Andre) Kopingon, Jennifer Capozzi; nephew, Nicolas Capozzi; and many relatives and dear friends.
Loved ones who cleared a path for Tom include his parents, Christina “Tina” and Angelo “Mac” Capozzi; his father-in-law, Dan Cedrone; sister-in-law, Shirley Cedrone; as well as several relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff who provided care and support throughout Tom’s health challenges, in particular, the team at Upstate Medical Center and Upstate Community Hospital.
Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 pm at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs St., Fayetteville. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom’s memory are welcome at Upstate Cancer Center or Immaculate Conception Church.
