Obituary for Margaret B. Langan

Margaret L. (Bauer) Langan, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2015, at her home in Fayetteville. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Anthony J. Langan of Fayetteville in 2009. Born in St. Louis, MO, on May 18, 1927, Margie was the daughter of the late Edwin G. Bauer and Cecile L. (Devos) Bauer, and the sister of the late Cecile L. (Bauer) Kluge. Because her father was a Regional Manager of National Cash Register Company, Margie attended three high schools - in St. Louis, MO, Milwaukee, WI, and finally Rochester, NY - graduating from Brighton High School in 1945. Always eager to make new friends, she was selected as a member of the Phi Zeta Epsilon sorority in high school in 1944, the “Brighton Harvest Queen” in 1945, a member of Sibley’s College Board in 1946, the president of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Syracuse University in 1948, and the “Sweetheart of Kappa Sigma” fraternity in 1949. After graduating from Syracuse University with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1949, she worked for five years as a Home Service Representative for Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation. Then, after winning Redbook Magazine’s National Design-a-Kitchen Contest (by creating three picture-puzzle pieces that could be arranged into six basic kitchen designs), she was hired as Associate Homemaking Editor of Redbook in Manhattan. After marrying Tony, she returned to Syracuse. Over the next half-century, she and Tony raised and educated six children, made many friends and traveled extensively throughout the world, including 14 trips to Europe (five of which were to Italy), and seven cruises to Europe, the Caribbean or South America on the Queen Elizabeth 2. In addition, they took their children on countless vacations, including ski and golf trips to their lodge in Sugarbush, VT, and a golf trip to Ballybunion, Ireland. Margie had a gift for gourmet cooking, clothes making, terrace gardening and keeping her children in line. She enjoyed tennis, skiing and golfing (breaking 90 for the first time at Bellevue when she was 33 years old, after playing for only five years, and going on to make two holes-in-one). She was formerly a member of Oak Hill Country Club, Bellevue Country Club, and Onondaga Golf and Country Club.
Margie is survived by her six children, Terence A. (Kathleen) Langan of Fayetteville, NY, Timothy J. (Catherine) Langan of Harding, NJ, Leonora M. (Theodore) Trespasz of Manlius, NY, John P. (Allison) Langan of Cazenovia, NY, Maria B. (Jonathan) Archer of Southampton, NY, and Michael G. (Sara) Langan of Fayetteville, NY. She had 19 adoring grandchildren and 15 loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, with burial at Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.
The family requests that donations be sent to Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs Street, Fayetteville, NY 13066.
