Obituary for Otto H. Hayes

Otto H. Hayes, 79, of East Syracuse passed away Thursday at his home. He was born in Syracuse on August 24, 1935 and lived most of his life in East Syracuse. He graduated from East Syracuse High School as a member of the Class of 1952.
He was employed by the Town of Manlius Highway Department for 25 years, a position from which he retired in 2000. Prior to that, he was employed by Oot Brothers as a general contractor/builder, and owned several businesses including a family-run hardware store in Minoa.
Otto was a communicant of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church for 59 years. He was President of the father/son/daughter Sunday morning bowling league at Fremont Lanes, and his business sponsored both men’s and women’s bowling teams over the years. He was a benevolent member of the Minoa Volunteer Fire Department. As a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, Otto enjoyed many different outdoor activities, and cherished more than five decades of summer seasons with his family members at their lakefront camp in Sackets Harbor, N.Y.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Otto H. Hayes, Sr. and Winifred (Nortz) Hayes, three brothers Paul , John and Hubert, and one sister Mary Chrysler.
Otto is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Ann (Sopper) Hayes; four sons, William R. (Linda Rae Markert), Baldwinsville, Michael F. (Kimberly), East Syracuse, Robert E. (Connie), Atco, N.J., and Patrick H. (Heather), Kirkville; one sister Zelma Cardinal, Baldwinsville; seven grandchildren, Katie, Alan, Michael David, Amanda, Sarah, Eden and Amber; two great-grandchildren Cole and Jack; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 PM Monday, August 17, 2015 at R.H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel 6530, Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa, NY.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 AM Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at St. Matthew’s Church, 100 Kinne Street, East Syracuse. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minoa.
