Obituary for Raymond Henry James Payne

Raymond Henry James Payne of Minoa, NY, died peacefully at home in his sleep on November 15, 2015 at the tender age of 78. Ray was born on July 30, 1937 in Wickhambreaux, England.   A rambunctious young man who was a self proclaimed expert at climbing trees, among other things, he was a devoted son and mentor for his younger brother, Ron.
After some interesting and albeit challenging school years, he enlisted in the British Army in 1955 and served in Cyprus in the Royal Corps of Signals.  In 1959 he moved to Birmingham, England, where he met his wife, Maureen Lilian Matthews (Mo), and they were married on May 16, 1959. In June of 1977, Ray and Mo took an incredible leap of faith and packed up all of their belonging and their two boys and emigrated to America.
An avid fan of all genres of music, especially Rock and Roll, Ray loved dancing with his bride at every opportunity.  His interests extended to being a reader of historical books, especially those related to British crime. Above all, Ray was most proud of his sons and his 5 grandchildren, with whom he spent a great deal of time.  He was known to them for his knack of telling a story and singing a song.  He enjoyed being with them for a card game and a conversation more than words can express.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 56 years; his brother, Ronald (Jackie); his devoted sons, Garry (Cindy) and Paul (Jerilyn); and his grandchildren, Matthew, Chloe, Michael, Anthony and Ian.  He is predeceased by his parents, Herbert Henry Payne & Ivy Lilian Payne (Pilcher).
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. at the R. H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ray's name to his favorite charity, St. Baldrick Foundation, 1333 South Mayflower Ave., Suite 400, Monrovia, CA 91016.
