Obituary for Edmund F. Schilling

Edmund F. Schilling
Edmund F. Schilling, Jr. passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the age of 90 after a brief illness, joining his beloved wife of 60 years, Carolyn S. Swain, who passed away November 28, 2015.
Ed, the youngest of 8 children, was born October 20, 1925 to Daisy Rebecca Barnhart and Edmund F. Schilling in Reading, PA. Ed attended Girard College, an elementary/secondary school in Philadelphia for fatherless children. At Girard, he excelled in academics, clarinet, baseball and soccer while developing a love for Girard Gingers.
Ed entered the US Navy in 1943, serving 3 years. In 1947 he enrolled in Syracuse University’s engineering program. While at SU, he worked the nightshift at General Electric and attended classes during the day. Ed played on the SU soccer team, earning two varsity letters. In 1950 he received a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and in 1953, a Master’s degree in Physics.
Ed’s association with GE lasted more than 40 years, with dozens of trips abroad to Europe and Asia. In the 1990’s, he led a team of engineers transferring GE’s Syracuse TV picture tube plant to Shenzen, China. He and Carol lived in Shenzen on and off for several years.
Ed enjoyed his golden years creating complex Excel spreadsheets, learning to code and cutting the grass under the billowing skies of Oran Valley. Over the past several years he enjoyed researching genealogy with niece, Teri Ranck Foster, and cousin, John Schilling, III.
Ed is survived by his four children, Edmund F. Schilling, III, David R. Schilling, Carla B. Schilling and Laura J. Schilling.
Ed was very proud of his four grandchildren, Kyle T. Schilling, Makaily A. Courtwright, Jasper Z. Schilling and Benjamin M. Courtwright. Ed is also survived by his brother-in-law, David L. Swain of Malibu, California.
Relatives and friends may call at St. David’s Parish Hall, 14 Jamar Drive, DeWitt, NY from 4:00-6:00 pm on Monday, April 25, 2016 in remembrance of our father.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 731 James Street, #200, Syracuse, NY 13203.
