Obituary for Athena Zhang

Athena “Tina” (Tzivani) Zhang, age 66, who lived in Syracuse for her entire life, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse. Tina was born July 6, 1950 in Syracuse, the daughter of Leonidas “Harry” and Anne Tzivani, and graduated from Nottingham High School, before earning her Master’s Degree in public health. As an art teacher, she taught art to hundreds of students over two and a half decades before retiring from Roberts School. Tina is remembered for her contagious joy, heart for people, and faith in Jesus. Throughout her life, and during her final bout with cancer, she lived out the sentiment of a favorite Bible verse: “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines...yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (Habakkuk 3:17-18).
Surviving are her parents, Leonidas and Anne Tzivani of Dewitt; her husband, Yong Zhang of Syracuse; her siblings, Steve Tzivanis and Debora Politis, both of Syracuse; her children, David Hammer and his wife Amy, of Danville, NH, Jeff Hammer and his wife Miyoung, of Pasadena, CA, Robert Hammer and his wife Lindsay, of Brockport, NY, Daniel Hammer and his wife Kate, of Syracuse, and Mia Zhang, of Pasadena, CA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Thursday, October 20th at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 East Genesee Street, Fayetteville. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Friday, October 21st, at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd, Syracuse.
