Obituary for Thomas R. Byrnes

Thomas R. Byrnes
Thomas R. Byrnes, 56, of Manlius, went home to his Lord early the morning of June 21, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Cathy; his sons Ian and Tim; and daughter Bethany. Tom is also survived by his mother, Jackie Byrnes of Bethlehem, PA; his three brothers Terry (Lonie), Matt (Adrianne) and Todd (Jen); and nine nieces and nephews.
Tom obtained his BS in geology from the University of Delaware and his masters in environmental science from SUNY/ESF. Tom used his advanced degree in his work for a number of consulting firms including his own (Clark Byrnes). He retired from his position as a hydrogeologist at Strategic Environmental in 2011, but continued to serve on the Manlius Town Planning Board until 2015. Tom also served on the ALS Association Board of Directors and the local Walk committee.
Tom loved the outdoors, especially doing anything with his children, hiking, biking, scuba diving and kayaking. The family enjoyed trips to Belize, the Caribbean and the Jersey shore. He was extremely proud of his children and never missed a wrestling match. An Eagle Scout himself, Tom assisted with Boy Scout Troop 152 for many years and was an active member of New Testament Baptist Church since 1990.
Tom was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2009. He has shared his journey with ALS through educational interviews and appeared on CNY Wellness in an effort to increase awareness. Team Byrnes has been a leading contributor to the ALS Association at the last six annual Walks to Defeat ALS.
The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to the Schepp Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 25 from 5 to 8pm at the New Testament Baptist Church, 1235 Old Stonehouse Road, Jamesville. Funeral services will be held at the church on Monday, June 26 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Tom’s name (Team Byrnes) may be made to the ALS Association of Upstate NY Chapter.
