Obituary for Joyce Swayze Douglas

Joyce Meredith Swayze Douglas, of East Syracuse, passed away on January 14, 2018 to be with her husband Donald, the love of her life. She was born in Otselic, NY in 1932. She attended East Syracuse schools and married in 1953. They lived in Minoa and raised two sons, and she worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She was a devoted grandma who spoiled her grandchildren as much as possible. Most recently, she enjoyed retirement life, especially the times she spent with her siblings, their spouses, and as many other family members as would fit in the room. She was one of the first tenants at Colonial Village Apartments in East Syracuse and developed lasting friendships with her neighbors.

Joyce is predeceased by husband, Donald, who died in 1984; siblings, Jean LaMora and Ernest Swayze; and parents, George and Sylvia Swayze. She is survived by sons, William (Susan) of Maine and Scott (Julie) of South Carolina; grandchildren, Zachary (Robyn) and Dufferin Douglas, Brandi (Mathew) Sturdevant, and Shawn (Miles) Vazquez; great-grandchildren, Kyra Sturdevant and Soul Vazquez; siblings, Roger Swayze, Joanne Goettel, Janet Harrington, Judith Baker, and Jill Swayze; along with the in-laws who she loved like siblings; and many nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours to remember Joyce and celebrate her life will be on Saturday, January 20 from 11 am to 1 pm at R.H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepps Corners Rd., Minoa. A reception will follow immediately afterward at the Colonial Village Apartments Community Room, 5890 Bowman Road, East Syracuse.

In lieu of flowers, consider making a contribution to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208 to help them continue their important work.
